A Castle For Christmas

Hi Movie Mainers,

Well here we go again I cannot believe another year has come and gone.   This year I decided that I would make it easy on myself and choose a new film on Netflix  A Castle For Christmas, starring Brooke Shields and Cary Elwes ( I have had a crush on this guy ever since The Princess Bride, he reminded me of Errol Flynn in that film)

Now I know what you are thinking yes, it is a little hokey but it is Christmas and I do not need deep I just need a little holiday film to get me in the mood.   It tells the story of a women who wants to buy this castle in Scotland, and a Duke that needs to sell his castle as he is broke.

I would like a email from everyone who would like to get together in January for our first movie and a dinner, it has been way too long.  I wish you all a happy holiday I miss you all it is time we all start watching films together.

The Royal Tenenbaums

Hello Moviemainers,

The film for the month of November is The Royal Tenenbaums, the most popular of Wes Anderson's films.   This is the story of a family with three children and their success at a young age and then problems as an adult.   Gene Hackman is wonderful as the father.  Alec Baldwin narrates the film.

I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and do not forget to email me and let me know that you enjoyed the film.

Rushmore

Hi Moviemainers,

Yes I am one day late in sending this out, I am winding down a bit on my gardening projects and will have more time soon (note from Carl... and I added another week to the delay!).

The film for the month of September is Rushmore 1998 Starring Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray.   This is a Wes Anderson film with writing also being done by Owen Wilson.   A student strikes up a friendship with a older man when they both fall for a teacher.   This film is considered number 34 of the 100 funniest films ever made.  This is the film that resurrected Bill Murray's career.   I hope you enjoy I thought choosing a film about school during the month of September was fitting.

The Vanishing

Hello Moviemainers,

How sad is this July has turned into the same weekend as Memorial weekend cold and raining, which brings me to the film for the month of July.  A British film called The Vanishing 2018.   This film tells the story of three lighthouse keepers who arrive on the island to start their 6 weeks of lighthouse keeping.   A body and a  boat and a box of gold shows up on shore and what happens next?  This is a psychological thriller it takes place in 1900.   The Isle of Flannan is 20 miles off the coast of the Isle of Lewis which is off Scotland.    There are no living residents on the Island and the lighthouse is now currently automated.

I hope you enjoy this film.   Please leave a comment if you like the film or not.

A Little Romance

Hi Moviemainers,

For the month of February Pearl asked if we could do a film from 1979 A Little Romance.   The film stars Diane Lane in her first film and Lawrence Olivier in one of his last films.  It is a light romantic comedy, telling the story of two 13 year olds in Paris who fall in love and along the journey meet with a kind elderly gentleman.   Remember if you have trouble finding this go to your library and ask if the librarian could please get the film for you through the library database (there are several copies of this movie in the Maine library system).  They are often able to locate older films that you may not be able to get through Netflix.  I have learned that netflix cannot get everything you want.   Several times I was very disappointed that they did not have what I was looking for.

Let me know if you enjoyed the film.   Cheer up spring will be here and I will look forward to seeing everyone.

I, Tonya

 Hello Moviemainers,

I know I am a little late for announcing the film but time sure flies when you are having fun (a joke).   The film for the month of January is  I, Tonya    About Tonya Harding and the  1994 Olympic ice skating tournament.   The film is considered a biographic black comedy .   Allison Janney won Best Supporting Actress at the 2018 Academy awards.

I thought it would be fun to do a little film trivia along with the announcing of the film.    Here goes for anyone that would like to play along.   Email me if you know the answer, I am aware that there are some people in the group that will just look it up on line, quickly so I will try to make this hard to find the answer as we are not having any movie club dinners or movie time.    I will try to think up a really great prize for all those people who are all about winning.    Here goes,  What sci-fi film marked both Drew Barrymore and William Hurt's film debuts?

I look forward to hearing from someone out there????????????   It is bad enough that we can not get together but a little communication would be great.
