The Christmas Tree

 Hello Moviemainers,

Here we are yet another year has come and gone.  I am trying to think of something positive to say about this year ????????   Well we are all still alive and healthy.  We can only look forward to a New Year with the return social gatherings and lots of movies to watch.

The film for the month of December is The Christmas Tree 1996 Starring Julie Harris.  It tells the true story of a man whose job it is to locate the tree for the Rockefeller Center and the nun he meets while scouting for the tree.  You can watch this film for free on Youtube and it was directed by Sally Field.  I hope you all have a wonderful holiday (although maybe not as exciting as it was last year); we must make the best of it.

For Your Consideration

Hi Moviemainers,

Here is the film for the month of November.   2006 For your Consideration.   This is a Christopher Guest film  which is really a parody on the news and film.     If you liked Spinal Tap or Best in Show, the cast is made up of the same stars.    Three actors believe that there is a possibility that the film they are starring in could be Oscar worthy.   When the name of the film is changed from Home For Purim to Home for Thanksgiving the three stars start acting as if they are big stars and all the crazy that goes with it.

I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving with or without the usual family members that get together .   My what times we are living in.    Take care and wend me an email if you liked the film.

Ed Wood

Hello Moviemainers,

The film for the month of October is 1994 Ed Wood  Starring  Johnny Depp and Martin Landau.   The film is produced and directed by Tim Burton.   The film is considered a comedy - drama biography of the B rated director Ed Wood.   The film takes place in 1952 Wood is a closeted transvestite who dreams of becoming a great director .   The film was considered a failure and as it cost 18 million to make and that it only grossed 5.9 million.   It is now considered a cult classic and it did end up winning two academy awards one for Martin Landau for best supporting actor and one for best makeup.   I say this every month I would love feedback from you on if you like the film or not and If there is a film you would love to share with the group let me know.   Stay healthy and for goodness sake stay in touch let me know you are out there reading my post.

The Great Imposter

Hello Moviemainers,

This month of August the film is The Great Imposter with Tony Curtis 1960.  It is based on the true story of Waldo Demara Jr.  The story begins with flashbacks of him quitting school and joining the army.  You will notice in this film very similar story to the film by Stephen Speilberg, Catch Me If You Can.  Tony Curtis has a way of playing the role with comedy and drama very well indeed.  I think he is wonderful in this film and I hope you enjoy.  This is also a true story.

I miss getting together with everyone to discuss the film and enjoy a nice meal.  I am hoping that some day soon we can all get together with a movie and dinner.

Send me an email if you enjoyed this film.  Stay in touch.

Peggy Sue Got Married

Hello Movie Mainers,   The film for the month of July is 1986  Peggy Sue Got Married.    Starring Kathleen Turner, Nicolas Cage and directed by Francis Ford Coppola.   The film tells the story of Peggy attending her 25 year high school reunion as she has recently separated from her husband and says if she only knew then what she knows now, she would have done many things differently.    She faints and is taken back in time, now you will see some similarities in this film and the Back to the Future films.    This film does have a twist to it.
I would love to say I would hope to see you all this month but I know that will not happen.    What I can say about the virus is ,   without the movies I would be lost, no friends and not going out to eat or out for a cocktail.   Quoting a line from a film " We will always have Paris"   I think no matter What "  We will always have the movies".    I am going to start running a contest and see who knows what film that line came from.    Email me with the answer.    Enjoy the film and I hope to hear from you .
Miss you all    Movielynne

Leave Her To Heaven

Hello Moviemainers,    The month of June the film is Leave Her To Heaven  1945 starring Gene Tierney,Jeanne Crain, Cornel Wilde and Vincent Price.
This is one of my favorite all time film noir  ( what is film noir you ask?    Film noir is a film marked by pessimism, fatalism and menace  1944- 1954.
The film tells the story of Ellen who is a violent obsessive and dangerously jealous person and what she does to get her way.   Hang onto your seat, Martin Scorsese considers this one of his all time favorite film.
Although the lake scene is supposedly Maine was actually  filmed in Northern California .    I look forward to seeing everyone by July as this has been a long 3 months without seeing the movie club fans.  Take care  Movielynne

Night Shift

Moviemainers April pick

I normally like to choose a film that relates to spring ( one of my favorite times of the year, the other being summer) I love grass turning green,  flowers blooming, riding my bike , going for walks  and just being able to walk out the door without thinking about being cold.  I felt this month we all need a good laugh something to distract us from what is going on in the world if only for a couple of hours.

The film is NIghtshift 1982  Starring Henry Winkler and Micheal Keaton .   The film was directed by Ron Howard and was based on a true story written in the New York Times about two men working on the night shift in the city morgue who started running a prostitution business.   Look for small cameos by Kevin Costner and Sharon Doherty .   This was Ron's second film and it was a big success and Henry Winler was nominated for a Golden Globe award for best actor.

I will not speak about who is hosting the next get together , it could be sometime before we can watch a film together, but we will always have the movies.   Quoting a line from a film we will always have Paris.    Ok who said that and in what film ?    I think I will start giving out prizes for people who actually answer the question.

Take care stay healthy and  stay in touch.

Reversal Of Fortune

Film for the month of March is Reversal Of Fortune  1990  starring Jeremy Irons, Glen Close, and Ron Silver.   This is the story of a man accused of killing his heiress wife by injecting her with insulin, and Alan Dershowitz getting him off.   I have been watching Alan Dershowitz on tv a lot lately and I started to think about his defending O.J. Simpson and then I remembered the case of Claus Von Bulow .   I remembered he had written the book about that case back in 1985 that was then turned into a film in 1990.   I have a good friend who is a forensic scientist in South Carolina who has worked with Alan on 8 cases after speaking with her lately I started to remember her telling me the story of the  8 cases of black men accused of a crime they did  not commit and Alan was defending them free of charge ( in the end only one of the 8 was actually innocent) .   This is a very well written script and Jeremy Irons won the Academy Award for Best Actor.   I hope you enjoy this film.

A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood

Hi all,

This is George and Carl writing to you this month.  We picked this month's movie and we hope you're as excited to see it as we are.  It's the new Tom Hanks movie, A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, about Mr. Rogers.  It's received outstanding reviews and Tom Hanks is nominated for a zillion awards... not surprising given what a phenomenal actor he is.

I found this cute story in NPR's website...

Hanks says he doesn't "look anything" like Rogers. He remembers director Marielle Heller telling him: "We will give you a wig and we'll try to figure out something with your eyebrows and the rest is up to you."

But he found that the zippered, cardigan sweater went a long way.

"It's kind of like a suit of armor," Hanks says. "I mean, Batman looks like Batman when he puts on that cape and cowl."

We'll show the movie and enjoy chicken pot pie at our house, 10 Constitution Road, Kennebunk at 4:30 on Sunday, Feb. 23.  Please RSVP if you can make it.

Ruthless People

Hi Moviemainers,

Well here we are it is now 2020 , boy times flies.   This month I thought we would do something funny and I think this is a very funny film with Danny Divito , Bette Midler , and Judge Reinhold.   1986 Ruthless People The film tells the story of a man planning to kill his wife when his wife suddenly gets kidnapped.  His plan is to not pay the ransom and let her die, things take a turn to negative town for him.   I hope you enjoy this one.

Jim and Leslie have offered to host the club for dinner on Saturday, January 25 at 6:00.  They don't have enough space for everyone to watch the movie so please watch the movie on your own and we can talk about it at dinner on the 25th.  Please RSVP to Leslie at LJRutherford@yahoo.com if you can make it for dinner.
