A Christmas Carol

Hello Moviemainers,

The film for the month of December is A Christmas Carol 1984   Starring George C. Scott.   What can I say but this is one of my favorite versions of the classic story .   Scott was nominated for an Emmy , considered by critics as one of the best definitive versions of a beloved literary classic.

I will not even get into who is hosting in the month of December as so little time this year for Christmas only 3 weeks after Thanksgiving.   I hope you all have a wonderful holiday.   Please leave a comment at the bottom of the blog site and let me know your thoughts on the film.

Company: A Musical Comedy

Hello Moviemainers,

This is Carl writing to you this month.  Lynne has kindly agreed to let me be the "guest movie diva" for September.  I thought it would be a nice tribute to Tom if the club were to choose a film that he would have loved.

We could have gone in several directions with this:  He loved the cast recordings of certain musicals (Fiorello, Annie Get Your Gun, and Mack and Mabel to name a few).  And there were certain performers he was fond of, such as Carmen Miranda and Marlene Dietrich.  He also loved anything by Stephen Sondheim, so I considered A Little Night Music and Follies knowing he was fond of those two musicals.  He actually thought Sondheim was more talented than The Beatles... which I suppose is proof that he wasn't always right.

The winning choice is an Emmy-winning 2008 episode of the PBS Great Performances series:  a revival of Sondheim's huge 1971 hit Company.  The songs in this musical are outstanding and the reviews of this particular performance are stellar.  I think he'd approve!

I'd like to show this performance at our house, 228 Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport, on Saturday night 9/7 at 6:00 pm.  The menu will feature some of Tom's favorite choices:  Ham rollups (of course!), shrimp, Cape Cod chips, Greek chicken and orzo, Greek salad, Greek spinach and rice, and tangerine marmalade cake.  Let me know if you can join us that night and raise a toast to Tom.

Thanks,
Carl

PS - If anybody would like to borrow July's movie, Sitting Pretty, let me know.  It's hard to find... but I tracked it down.

The Swimmer

Hello Moviemainers,

Well, it is August and as usual summer is going way too fast for me.  I love walking outside with just a short sleeve shirt.  I found this film I believe I saw many many years ago I thought you would enjoy so here goes.

The Swimmer 1968 Starring Burt Lancaster.  When an ad man decides to swim across every pool in town he meets up with people from his past and of different backgrounds, until a final visit leaves him devastated.  This film was shot in Westport Connecticut and the soundtrack was composed by a young 24 year old called Marvin Hamlisch.  Rotten Tomatoes gives it 100%.  Originally not a huge hit at the movies but since it has been remastered in 2013 it is thought to be a real gem.

See you at the movies,
Movielynne

It Happened To Jane

Hello Moviemainers.    The film for the month of June is It Happened to Jane  1959   Starring Doris Day, Jack Lemmon and Ernie Kovacs, and a great comedian supporting actress Mary Wicks ( she was so good in so many films )   The film tells the story of Jane a widow with two small children from the coast of Maine who runs a lobster shipping business ( I thought this particular film as it is summer and we are on the coast of Maine would be nice for June.   She sues the railroad Company when her lobsters do not get delivered to their destination.   I loved Doris Day and I can not tell you how many times I watched Pillow Talk or Lover come back or Send me no Flowers, as these are on tv very often I thought this would be a little different.    Although this film was shot in Connecticut not Maine, it is still believable.   All the people in the background were not actors but residents of the Connecticut.   They all wanted a chance to be in the film.  I hope you enjoy the film and please feel free to send me an email if there is a film that interests you that you would like me to post.   Have a wonderful June and hope to see you soon.     P.S.  Yes Doris sings the title song love that voice of hers.    Movielynne

Did You Hear About The Morgans?

Hi Moviemainers,

The month of February is a romantic comedy, we need as many laughs as possible during the cold winter months.  The film DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MORGANS?  2009 Starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant.  A New York power couple witness a murder and end up in the witness protection program in Wyoming.  Now the film is not a fast pace who done it but more of a fun movie  to take in.  The soundtrack has a couple of great songs on it one is by Buddy Holly called TRUE LOVE WAYS and the other song you hear on the film is George Harrison (one of Carl's favorites) singing Between The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea.

Enjoy these films keep warm and remember to leave a comment on the page.  I would love to hear from you.

Fandango

Dear Moviemainers,

Happy New Year's!  Let us hope that 2019 will bring us plenty of good times and most of all plenty of great movies to talk about.  Before I start to talk about the upcoming film I must say thank you so much to Ted and Greg for hosting the movie club to watch the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.  Dinner for 17 to them, no problem.  Plenty of food and plenty  of great conversations and a great movie, it does not get better then that.

This month of January we are starting with a comedy drama made in 1985 called Fandango starring Kevin Costner.  This little film was actually made by a student in film school.   Steven Speilberg helped to fund the film but would not allow his name at the end of the film as he did not like the ending as well as it could be.  You decide.  Thanks again for everyone who brought food to Ted and Greg's lovely home.  I forgot to ask where he got the very cool tall Christmas tree, loved it too!

Keep watching.  Your movie diva,
Movielynne
