Brief Encounter

The film for the month of February is Brief Encounter 1945, Starring Cecila Johnson and Trevor Howard.   Directed by David Lean  It tells the story of a housewife who meets a stranger in the railway station right before the outbreak of WW2.   Now of course you know it is Valentine's Day this month I know I should look for newer films but this film is considered to be The top twelfth British Film of all times.    I will be returning to Maine on February 21 I hope to get together with you all at the end of the month.

The Month of January the film is Broadway Danny Rose,   Starring Woody Allen and Mia Farrow.  1984 Is a Black and White film written and Directed by Woody Allen It tells the story of a Low Level talent agent who agrees to help a client and gets dragged into a love triangle and the mob.

The Bishop's Wife

The Bishop's Wife, 1947.  Starring Loretta Young, David Niven, Cary Grant and a wonderful character actor named Monty Woolley.  This is the story of an angel that comes down from heaven to help a bishop with his church and his marriage.  One of my favorite character actors is Monty Woolley.  A lot of people do not know that he was a professor of drama at Yale, and was forced out after a falling out with the President of Yale.  His friend Cole Porter asked him to come to Broadway to  perform in one of his plays and from there he starred in many films.  One of my favorite stories of Monty: while on a world cruise with  Cole and his wife Linda, Cole looked at the sunrise and said "it's delightful".  His wife Linda added "it's delicious" and Monty said "it's De-lovely!"  Boy do I love the movies!

The Legend Of 1900

Dear Moviemainers,

This month is a combination of film picks for two months, October and November combined.  Once the holidays start rolling around people get to busy to see more then one film.  I would really like to hear back from the members on this one particular film.  

As you have heard my film buddy Larry the Film Guy has sold his house and is moving to Minnesota.  This film is one of Larry's all time favorite and, yes, now it is one of mine. The film is called The Legend of 1900 filmed in 1998, how did I ever miss this film?  This was originally an Italian film, and remade in 1998 by the Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore.  The film stars Tim Roth as an orphan baby left on a cruise ship.    A worker in the boiler room is determined to keep the baby.  The child grows up to be a gifted piano player and spends his life on the cruise ship entertaining the guests.  I would have to say that this is one of my favorite films as well.  

We will all miss Larry and those special movie nights in his movie theater.  What a wonderful gift to get to meet Larry and have many film talks with him.  You can catch us talking on utube about films.  I am in town and will be here for the holidays.

A Shock To The System

Dear Moviemainers, 

The film for the month of September is 1990  A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM Starring Michael Caine, Peter Riegert, Swoozie Kurtz and Elizabeth McGovern.  The film is a story of a man who gets passed over for promotion at an ad agency.  His nagging wife belittles him and a much younger man gets the job.  He cleverly gets rid of all the people who stood in his way and works his way to the top.  Not wanting to give too much away, the plot has a way of keeping you on the edge of your seat.  Now I have had trouble getting this movie, The libraries have their own data base, even if they do not have it in their library, they can request it from another library.  I had no luck with Netflix.  Keep trying this is a film worth the effort.

The Whales Of August

Dear Moviemainers,

The film for the month is THE WHALES OF AUGUST, 1987.  It's the story of two elderly sisters who spend their summer on an island off the coast of Maine.  Starring Bette David, Lillian Gish, Ann Sothern and one of my favorite character actors Vincent Price.  The film ran for one full year in Tokyo Japan it was so popular.  I will be in Maine on August 31.  I will confirm movie night with Larry the film guy.  I hope to see you all on my next trip to Maine.

The Importance of Being Earnest

Dear Moviemainers.  

Happy Forth of July! The film for the month of July is The Importance of Being Ernest 2002 Starring Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Judi Dench, and Reese Witherspoon.  I think it is about time we did a comedy , it is after all summer and  time to relax and chill with our friends.  I will say,  who knew Colin Firth and Rupert could sing so well (Lady come Down) very funny indeed.
